The Blood Moon Calling is an original painting by Philip Surry, it is coated in a gloss varnish that includes a holographic glitter effect. Secured in a floating thick, high-quality, gloss black frame; the painting is stunningly powerful, highly textured and deeply layered. Many, many hours of work went into this vivid wall art.
Inspiration:
In 2017 I founded a charity called Man Club. A place for Men to talk, listen and be heard. I created a space where the tradition of using a talking stick was sacred, where a man may speak his truth and stay within the 4 walls. Man Club witnessed many men share their deepest fears and vulnerabilities - every man was supported, shoulder to shoulder. From this experience, we started a wild sea swim group called Numbnuts (couldn't resist the pun!). The sea taught us the power of nature and its significance. If you can get in the cold sea in the depths of winter in the dark, rain and hail - what else can you do in life?
Man Club taught men to ask; What if it all goes right? - then what if it goes wrong...
My calling to Men's work continues, and it is through art sales that I am able to finance more time and space to continue this vital work.
When Men gather in a space of sacred, when they honour the circle, magic happens. That is how this piece of art came into existence...
In 2022 I held a Fire Ceremony for a group of 13 Men.
The journey was primordial. Held in the fading light in a forested area on the island of Guernsey we lit and honoured the fire just as our ancestors have always done.
With breath work, with the beat of the drum in the Icelandic thunderclap, and with the primal energy of the fire breath as Men we felt the power rise within us; both as each individual - but also as a collective.
Part of the experience was to use the sacred tradition of sharing One’s truth with a talking stick. The deepest fears, grief, and struggle were all shared and acknowledged.
With the Guard of honour, each man enters a corridor of Men, cheering him on with clapping and words of encouragement as the drum beats louder and louder. Finally, at the end of the corridor, each man burns what he has shared; what he is letting go of.
For personally I burnt my fear of failure
Since that night I have felt the raw sacred power of my masculine energy.
The call to the wild.
I feel at one when hiking, in the sea, in nature - feeling my own power - without wordsThis original artwork; the Blood Moon Call is the very essence of that energy
The work has been inscribed with nordic runes of protection, vitality, and prosperity
May its energy remind you that within us all we hold the power of the masculine. The wolf, the Crow, and the Moon.
In honour,
Philip Surry
